Eastern Briarwood Groundwater Plume

Source of the Plume

A specific source area for the Eastern Briarwood groundwater plume was not defined during investigations conducted thus far. Groundwater contamination is believed to emanate from several locations such as the former heat plant and various maintenance shops and hangars.

Primary Contaminants

The primary contaminants are TCE and PCE. Historically, the highest levels detected have been 19 ppb of TCE and 8 ppb of PCE. The safe drinking water standard, or maximum contaminant level, for both compounds is 5 ppb.

Affected Area

The Eastern Briarwood groundwater plume extends from the southeast base boundary underneath the Eastern Briarwood property development between Johns Pond and Moody Pond. The plume is 3,000 feet long, 300 feet wide, and 20 to 30 feet thick. The top of the plume is 0-20 feet below the water table.

Plume Cleanup

The Eastern Briarwood plume was originally scheduled for remediation. However, because the plume is very small, no one is using the groundwater for drinking water, and exceedances of drinking water standards were intermittent, remedial action was put on hold and long-term monitoring was implemented.

Next Steps

Recent tests confirm the original conditions of the plume, and long-term monitoring will continue. Additional monitoring wells are currently being installed at five locations in the plume to collect additional data and ensure site conditions.
