NEWS RELEASE 2000-25 Air Force Invites Public to Discuss Ashumet Pond Nutrients Advisory Group MASSACHUSETTS MILITARY RESERVATION (MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) officials will host a meeting to solicit interest from Ashumet Pond stakeholders about establishing a nutrients advisory group for Ashumet Pond. The purpose of this nutrients advisory group will be to advise AFCEE on actions for Ashumet Pond to address nutrient enrichment (primarily phosphorus), related to discharge of groundwater impacted by treated wastewater disposal at the former MMR wastewater treatment plant. Nutrients, including nitrogen and phosphorus, are used by living things to promote biological growth. However, if ponds are over-enriched with nutrients, excessive growth of algae may occur. Group members might include local, state and federal regulators, neighborhood residents and anyone else interested in phosphorus and its affect on Ashumet Pond. The most recent information collected by AFCEE about the ecological health of Ashumet Pond will be presented during this meeting. AFCEE is recommending short-term actions to reduce available phosphorus within the pond, testing of a technology to provide additional reductions in phosphorus located in soils near the pond, and on-going monitoring.
