Air Force to Present Additional Information Concerning Phosphorus Inactivation Plan for Ashumet Pond at Mashpee Conservation Commission Hearing

MASSACHUSETTS MILITARY RESERVATION, Cape Cod, Mass. — In accordance with the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and implementing regulations (M.G.L. c. 131, §40 and 310 CMR 10.00), the Mashpee Conservation Commission will host a public hearing on September 7, 2000 to hear additional information concerning the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence’s (AFCEE) proposal for a targeted phosphorus inactivation in Ashumet Pond. AFCEE submitted a Notice of Intent (NOI) application with the Mashpee Conservation Commission on July 14, 2000 and an initial public hearing was held on July 27, 2000. At the end of the initial public hearing, the Town requested that AFCEE provide additional details about its proposal during another public hearing. The hearing scheduled for August 24, 2000, was cancelled because of the lack of a continuing quorum of the same Mashpee Conservation Commission Board members.

This targeted phosphorus inactivation project is a component of a larger program to reduce phosphorus inputs to Ashumet Pond from pond sediment (regeneration) and a groundwater plume related to the former MMR wastewater treatment plant. Although the proposed action will take place in Mashpee, residents of Mashpee and Falmouth abutting the pond, as well as members of both towns’ Conservation Commissions, have been invited to this hearing.
