NEWS RELEASE
2004-12 Massachusetts
Military Reservation (MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. Officials from the Air Force Center
for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) will host a meeting of the Ashumet Pond Nutrients
Advisory Group (APNAG) on Tuesday, June 1st, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. The meeting is open
to the public and will be held in the Quashnet Valley Country Club located at 309 Old
Barnstable Road in Mashpee. The purpose of the meeting is to provide an update and an opportunity for public input on construction and monitoring plans for an iron barrier project in Ashumet Pond. The AFCEE is planning to install iron flakes in the top two feet of pond sediments along a portion of the northwest shoreline of the pond. This project will reduce the amount of phosphorus in groundwater that enters the pond near the boat ramp. AFCEE officials will explain the construction of the iron barrier and related monitoring work at the meeting. Permits are currently being sought for this project and this meeting will provide an opportunity for neighborhood residents, and others interested in phosphorus and its effect on Ashumet Pond, to provide input and feedback about the project. Background information on APNAG and MMR activities associated with Ashumet pond, including the Ashumet Pond Phosphorus Inactivation Report, can be found on the MMR website, www.mmr.org.
