Cleanup
In 1982, the Installation Restoration
Program (IRP) was initiated by the Department of Defense to investigate
and clean up environmental problems at the Otis Air National Guard Base
on the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR). The program was expanded
in 1986 to cover Camp Edwards (Army National Guard) and the U.S. Coast
Guard Air Station Cape Cod. Seventy-eight separate source
areas have been identified as having the potential for environmental
problems. These include landfills, coal yards, storm drains, firefighter
training areas, and areas where fuel and chemical spills were reported.
There are also groundwater plumes originating
from MMR. Through the IRP, much progress has been made on the cleanup
of soils and groundwater. |
