The History of Pollution:
The Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR) was established
for military use in 1935. Up until the 1980s, awareness of the
environmental impacts of local disposal and spills of fuels,
oils, and other hazardous materials to the drinking water was
low nation-wide. Since the 1980s, programs have been created and
followed to prevent pollution of the environment. But the
pollution of the past is still being cleaned up.
The Installation Restoration Program (IRP) was established on
the MMR in 1982 to address environmental impacts of past
activities on the MMR. Through the IRP, former oil and hazardous
materials disposal activities and releases are evaluated and
addressed. The Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence has managed the IRP at the MMR since
1996.
