Air Force to Host Meeting on Ashumet Pond Nutrients

MASSACHUSETTS MILITARY RESERVATION, Cape Cod, Mass. The Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) announced today that it will host a meeting of the Ashumet Pond Nutrients Advisory Group (APNAG) on Thursday, August 8, 2002. The meeting will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Barnstable County Fairgrounds Administration Building on Route 151 in Falmouth. The public is encouraged to attend.

The purpose of the meeting is to update the community regarding the Ashumet Pond phosphorus inactivation project that AFCEE conducted last fall. The project applied liquid alum to 28 of the pond’s 203 acres in an effort to reduce the release of phosphorus from the pond’s bottom sediments.

The military base’s former wastewater treatment plant was a significant source of the phosphorus. Although the plant was closed in 1995, phosphorus has been traveling from the base in a groundwater plume with a portion of it discharging into Ashumet Pond. Phosphorus and other nutrients also enter the pond through residential septic systems and stormwater runoff.

The APNAG provides comments and advice on proposed AFCEE actions for reducing phosphorus inputs to Ashumet Pond from MMR’s former wastewater treatment plant.
