Public Invited to the September PCT Meeting

Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. — The PCT is a citizen advisory team that provides advice to the regulatory agencies and the AFCEE Installation Restoration Program (IRP). The IRP is the organization responsible for groundwater and soil investigation and cleanup on the southern portion of the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR).

A meeting topic includes a presentation on the Chemical Spill 23 (CS-23) Remedial Investigation workplan, which is being issued for a 14-day informal public comment period starting on September 11th. The workplan identifies monitoring and sampling well locations including installation of new monitoring wells to further define the CS-23 plume, which is located between the Landfill 1 (LF-1) and CS-21 plumes.

Another meeting topic is the Storm Drain 5 (SD-5) plume, which is currently in the Interim Record of Decision to Record of Decision (IROD to ROD) process. The presentation includes the results of the risk evaluation that is based on the latest risk assessment data, which identifies contaminants of concerns and potential risk to human health and the environment. The presentation also consists of various alternatives to clean up the plume. Currently the SD-5 plume is treated with an extraction, treatment, and reinjection system, more commonly known as a “pump and treat” system.

The public is encouraged to attend this meeting and interact with members of the citizen advisory team, as well as representatives of AFCEE and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
