Air Force Completes Cleanup of Contaminated Soil Site at MMR

Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. — Officials of the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) announced today that the cleanup of petroleum-contaminated soil at the Chemical Spill-22 (CS-22) site on the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR) has been completed.

The 1/2-acre site, a former sand and gravel pit, is located inside the MMR’s Sandwich Access Gate at the northeastern end of Snake Pond Road.

In the summer of 2002, nearly 440 cubic yards of contaminated soil and waste debris were excavated from the site and shipped to an off-Cape landfill for disposal.  The site was restored with clean backfill, topsoil and grass seed.

Details of the cleanup are documented in the CS-22 Removal Action Report, which has been approved by officials at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.

CS-22 is the 44th contaminated soil site to be cleaned up at MMR.
