NEWS RELEASE
2003-34 Massachusetts Military Reservation
(MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. Officials of the Air Force Center for Environmental
Excellence (AFCEE) announced today that the cleanup of a small area of PCB-contaminated
soil at the Chemical Spill-8 (CG) site on the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR) has
been completed. The 14-foot by 8-foot site, the former
location of an abandoned metal radio cabinet with electrical components and a small
transformer, is located along the eastern boundary of the MMR. In December of 2002, approximately 25
cubic yards of contaminated soil containing PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, were
excavated with a maximum depth of six feet. In March 2003, the contaminated soil and
the radio cabinet were shipped to an off-Cape hazardous waste landfill for disposal.
The site was restored with clean backfill. Details of the cleanup are documented in
the August 2003 CS-8 (CG) Removal Action Report, which has been approved by officials at
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental
Protection. For more information, please call Mr. Doug Karson, AFCEE/MMR Community Involvement Specialist, at (508) 968-4678, ext. 2. |
