Air Force Completes Cleanup of Contaminated Soil at MMR Site

Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. — Officials of the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) announced today that the cleanup of a small area of PCB-contaminated soil at the Chemical Spill-8 (CG) site on the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR) has been completed.

The 14-foot by 8-foot site, the former location of an abandoned metal radio cabinet with electrical components and a small transformer, is located along the eastern boundary of the MMR.

In December of 2002, approximately 25 cubic yards of contaminated soil containing PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, were excavated with a maximum depth of six feet.  In March 2003, the contaminated soil and the radio cabinet were shipped to an off-Cape hazardous waste landfill for disposal.   The site was restored with clean backfill.

Details of the cleanup are documented in the August 2003 CS-8 (CG) Removal Action Report, which has been approved by officials at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
