NEWS RELEASE
2003-38 Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. Removal of two recirculating well groundwater treatment systems in Mashpees Briarwood area will begin the first week in December, according to officials of the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE). The treatment systems, which are located below the road surface on Wheeler Road and on Hillside Avenue near Highland Street, are no longer needed since the concentration of contaminants in the nearby groundwater is now below state and federal cleanup standards. Work is expected to begin on December 1st and continue until December 30th. No work will occur over the holiday from December 23-28. The work will be performed between the hours of 8:00 a.m. until dark, Monday through Friday, with one-half hour allowed for equipment setup beginning at 7:30 a.m. The work will involve the use of some heavy equipment, including a backhoe, crane, trucks, a generator, and a hydraulic hammer. One lane of the street will remain open for traffic. A Town of Mashpee police officer will be present during the work hours. The removal of the recirculating wells and the restoration of the area is being done with the concurrence of officials from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. The wells began operating in June 1999 and effectively hastened the treatment of trichloroethylene (TCE) contamination associated with the Storm Drain-5 (SD-5) South groundwater plume that resulted from past activities at the Massachusetts Military Reservation.
