Public Invited to the February PCT Meeting

Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. — Officials of the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) announced today that the Plume Cleanup Team (PCT) will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11, 2004 at the Quashnet Valley Country Club, 309 Old Barnstable Road in Mashpee.

The PCT is a citizen advisory team that provides advice to the regulatory agencies and the AFCEE Installation Restoration Program (IRP). The IRP is the organization responsible for groundwater and soil investigation and cleanup on the southern portion of the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR).

Two main meeting presentations are the Fuel Spill 1 (FS-1) Annual Report, and Ashumet Valley and Landfill 1 (LF-1) Phase II Interim Record of Decision to Record of Decision (IROD to ROD) Work Plan. The FS-1 plume is located in Mashpee on the east side of MMR, extending off base to the Quashnet River. The source of the FS-1 plume was an area used about 40 years ago to test fuel dump valves on aircrafts, where fuel was released directly onto the ground. The Ashumet Valley and LF-1 Phase II Work Plan describes the technical approaches to evaluate the plumes and risks posed to public health and the environment, and implementing appropriate final groundwater cleanup decisions.

Presentations of the FS-13 Source Area Supplemental Site Investigation Work Plan and Multi-plume Data Collection will also be given. Other meeting topics include brief updates on the construction of treatment systems for the Chemical Spill 4 (CS-4), CS-20, CS-21, and FS-29 plumes; and LF-1 further investigation.

The public is encouraged to attend this meeting to interact with members of the citizen advisory team, as well as representatives of AFCEE, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
