Air Force to Hold Public Comment Period on Ashumet Valley and Landfill-1 Work Plan

Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. — The Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) will hold a 14-day informal public comment period on the draft “Work Plan for the Process Leading to Final Remedial Decisions for Ashumet Valley and Landfill-1” groundwater plumes.

An Interim Record of Decision (IROD) was signed in 1995 to accelerate the cleanup process for the containment of seven groundwater plumes. Although treatment systems have been installed and contaminated water is being treated, the cleanup decisions made then were “interim”. At this time, AFCEE, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) are resuming the process to reach final Records of Decision (RODs) in accordance with the requirements in the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act.

Remedial investigations for the Ashumet Valley and Landfill 1 (LF-1) plumes have been completed; however, updated risk assessments are needed before proceeding to final cleanup decisions. The risk assessments will be based on current site conditions. In addition, the human health and ecological risk will be calculated using the most recent data available, based on current EPA guidelines.

The 14-day informal public comment period begins March 29, 2004 and ends on April 11, 2004.

Copies of the Work Plan will be available for review during the public comment period at the main libraries in Sandwich, Bourne, Mashpee and Falmouth, as well as at the Installation Restoration Program office and the IRP web site at http://www.mmr.org
