Public Invited to the April PCT Meeting

Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. — Officials of the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) announced today that the Plume Cleanup Team (PCT) will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at the Quashnet Valley Country Club, 309 Old Barnstable Road in Mashpee.

The PCT is a citizen advisory team that provides advice to the regulatory agencies and the AFCEE Installation Restoration Program (IRP). The IRP is the organization responsible for groundwater plume and soil cleanup in the southern portion of the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR). A plume is a body of groundwater containing contaminants exceeding federal and state drinking water standards.

Two main meeting presentations are the Storm Drain 5 (SD-5) and Chemical Spill 10 (CS-10) Annual Report and CS-10 Leading Edge. The CS-10 and SD-5 plumes are located in the town of Mashpee near Ashumet and Johns Ponds. The primary contaminants in the CS-10 and SD-5 plumes are trichloroethene (TCE) and perchloroethene (PCE).

An additional presentation is a report on the findings of a geophysical investigation at CS-19. The CS-19 site is located within the Impact Area of MMR and the main contaminants include explosives and propellants. It will include a discussion of the recent geophysical survey conducted by the Air Force to look for buried ordnance objects.

Other meeting topics are updates on risk assessment, drive-point sampling results from multiple plumes, Ashumet Pond geochemical iron barrier application, and construction of treatment systems for the CS-4, CS-20, CS-21, and Fuel Spill 29 (FS-29) plumes.

The public is encouraged to attend this meeting to interact with members of the citizen advisory team, as well as representatives of AFCEE, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
