Military Reservation (MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. Officials of the Air Force Center
for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) announced today that the Plume Cleanup Team (PCT)
will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at the Bourne Best Western, 100
Trowbridge Road in Bourne. The PCT is a
citizen advisory team that provides advice to the regulatory agencies and the AFCEE
Installation Restoration Program (IRP). The IRP is the organization responsible for
groundwater and soil investigation and cleanup on the southern portion of the
Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR). The main
meeting topic is the Landfill 1 (LF-1) Annual Report. The LF-1 plume extends west of MMR
into the town of Bourne. The annual report contains an overview of the landfill cap,
groundwater plume, treatment system, and seep/surface water monitoring of Squeteague and
Red Brook Harbors. Another
meeting topic focuses on the results of a geophysical investigation at CS-19. The CS-19
site is located within the Impact Area of MMR and the main contaminants include explosives
and propellants. This topic will include a discussion of the recent geophysical survey
conducted by the Air Force to look for buried ordnance. Other meeting
topics include presentations on the Eastern Briarwood and Western Aquafarm risk
evaluation, and Storm Drain 5 (SD-5) feasibility study alternatives. The public is encouraged to attend this meeting to interact with members of the citizen advisory team, as well as representatives of AFCEE, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
