NEWS RELEASE
2004-13 Massachusetts
Military Reservation (MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. Officials from the Air Force Center
for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) announced today that based on public comments
received during the April 7, 2004 informational meeting, a proposed groundwater treatment
associated with the cleanup of the Chemical Spill 4 (CS-4), CS-20, CS-21 and Fuel Spill 29
(FS-29) groundwater plumes in Falmouth will be relocated from the Crane Wildlife
Management Area (CWMA) to a location on the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR). At the informational meeting, the treatment plant was sited within
the CWMA, just north of the intersection of Cloverfield Way, Route 151, Sam Turner Road
and Boxberry Hill Road. Because numerous residents expressed concerns regarding
increased traffic, tree-clearing, construction noise, and building size, AFCEE, in
conjunction with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the
Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), evaluated the option of moving
the location of the treatment northward, just inside the MMR boundary. It
was determined that the integrity of the multi-plume cleanup project will remain the same,
as AFCEE will run underground piping from the previous location to the new location.
Despite the increased piping run, the new location on the MMR has advantages such
as: minimal clearing needed, easy access for construction equipment and maintenance, and
increased distance from Falmouth residential areas. The proposed size of the
treatment plant also has the capacity for expansion in the future if needed to treat a
nearby plume. For more information, please call Mr. Doug Karson, AFCEE Community Involvement Specialist at 508-968-4670 ext. 4678. |
