NEWS RELEASE
2004-18 Massachusetts
Military Reservation (MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. Officials of the Air Force Center
for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) recently announced that cleanup actions for three
source area sites have been completed. These cleanup actions are documented in a
recently released report entitled, Final Storm Drain-2/Fuel Spill-6/Fuel Spill-8
Remedial Action Report. Mr. Jon Davis, Program Manager of the Installation
Restoration Program stated, Source area cleanup is very important to the success of
the entire groundwater cleanup program. These sites are no longer a threat to the
groundwater or the nearby ecosystem. The United States Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
have concurred that cleanup actions have been completed. The sites are located south of the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR) on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The work described in this report solely addressed cleanup actions related to soil contamination. The cleanup actions were determined to be consistent with the final Record of Decision, signed by AFCEE and EPA, with MassDEP concurrence. Cleanup actions included excavating 344 cubic yards of contaminated soils and sediment and transporting them to a facility licensed to accept them. When excavation work was complete the areas were filled with clean soil. The cleanup actions described in this report were completed between June and October 2002 by one of AFCEEs prime contractors, Environmental Chemical Corporation (ECC). This report concludes that cleanup actions have removed contaminated soils and sediment to levels protective of human health and the environment and that no additional site investigation or cleanup actions are needed. Copies of this report can be found at the Bourne and Mashpee public libraries, and on the MMR website, www.mmr.org. To learn more about the cleanup program visit our website at www.mmr.org BACKGROUND: During the 1980s, preliminary assessments were completed involving record searches, interviews and review of available soil and groundwater data on MMR. 73 areas were identified as having the potential for contamination release to the environment, some of which were categorized as Source Areas. Storm Drain-2 (SD-2) is a drainage ditch that extends approximately 2,500 feet south-southwest from the southern boundary of MMR towards Ashumet Pond. In the early 1960s, two fuel spills, identified as Fuel Spill-6 and Fuel Spill-8, released a total of approximately 23,000 gallons of fuel on the aircraft maintenance ramp and the fuel was reportedly washed into a storm drainage system that discharges to SD-2. Several metals found in soils, (lead, chromium, zinc) were considered to be a risk to the surrounding ecosystem, but not to human health. Soils were excavated to protect potential human and ecological receptors from exposure to unacceptable concentrations of these metals. |
