Public Invited to the August PCT Meeting

MASSACHUSETTS MILITARY RESERVATION, Cape Cod, Mass. —Officials from the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) announced today that the Plume Cleanup Team (PCT) will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 11, 2004 at the Bourne Best Western, 100 Trowbridge Road in Bourne.

The PCT is a citizen advisory team that provides advice to the regulatory agencies and the AFCEE Installation Restoration Program (IRP). The IRP is the organization responsible for groundwater and soil investigation and cleanup on the southern portion of the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR).

Two main meeting presentations are the projected way forward for the Chemical Spill 19 (CS-19) groundwater and soil and the CS-10 Leading Edge investigation. The CS-19 site is located within the Impact Area of MMR. The CS-10 plume is located in the town of Mashpee near Ashumet and Johns Ponds.

Another meeting presentation focuses on the Landfill 1 (LF-1) Risk Evaluation. The LF-1 plume extends from MMR westward into the town of Bourne. The risk evaluation was conducted as part of the final Record of Decision (ROD) process. The information from the risk evaluation is used to develop remedial action objectives (RAO), which will be considered in the LF-1 feasibility study.

Other meeting topics include brief updates on the Eastern Briarwood and Western Aquafarm sites; data on the relationship of LF-1 to CS-23; Ashumet Pond geochemical barrier installation; and the U.S. Coast Guard’s investigation into the on-base discovery of methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) in 2003.

The public is encouraged to attend this meeting to interact with members of the citizen advisory team, as well as representatives of AFCEE, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
