Public Invited to December PCT Meeting

MASSACHUSETTS MILITARY RESERVATION, Cape Cod, Mass. — Officials of the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) announced today that the Plume Cleanup Team (PCT) will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at the Holiday Inn, 291 Jones Road in Falmouth.

The PCT is a citizen advisory team that provides advice to the regulatory agencies and the AFCEE Installation Restoration Program (IRP). The IRP is responsible for groundwater and soil investigation and cleanup on the southern portion of the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR).

One of the main meeting presentations will be the Chemical Spill 19 (CS-19) source and groundwater update. The CS-19 site is located within the Impact Area of MMR. The presentation will include the status of on-base soil excavation containing the contaminant Royal Demolition Explosive (RDX). A Proposed Plan (PP) for an interim action of groundwater monitoring will be summarized. The IRP plans to issue the CS-19 PP for public comments in mid-December 2004.

Additional meeting presentations are performance data from an iron geochemical barrier that was installed beneath the shoreline of Ashumet Pond this past summer, and the Landfill 1 (LF-1) Feasibility Study, which contains the alternatives being considered for final cleanup decisions for LF-1.

The public is encouraged to attend this meeting and to interact with members of the citizen advisory team, as well as representatives of AFCEE, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
