NEWS RELEASE
2005-09 MASSACHUSETTS MILITARY RESERVATION, Cape Cod, Mass.
Officials of the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) announced today
that the Plume Cleanup Team (PCT) will meet at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, 2005 at the
Cataumet United Methodist Church, 1097 County Road, Cataumet. The PCT is a
citizen advisory team that provides advice to the regulatory agencies and the AFCEE
Installation Restoration Program (IRP). The IRP is responsible for groundwater and
soil investigation and cleanup on the southern portion of the Massachusetts Military
Reservation (MMR). The main
meeting topic is a presentation on the remedial alternatives for the Landfill 1 (LF-1)
plume, which are being considered for the selection of a remedy to be included in a final
Record of Decision (ROD). The LF-1 groundwater plume is located in Bourne and has
been undergoing active remediation with a groundwater extraction, treatment, and
infiltration system since August 1999. Another
meeting presentation focuses on the Chemical Spill 19 (CS-19) Soil Engineering Evaluation
and Cost Analysis (EE/CA) document. The EE/CA was prepared to expedite the soil cleanup
process and it contains an evaluation of the cleanup alternatives. Other meeting
topics are annual updates on plans for residential and surface water sampling; Federal
Facility Agreement enforceable milestones; and the Fuel Spill 1 (FS-1) plume. The public is encouraged to attend this meeting to interact with members of the citizen advisory team, as well as representatives of AFCEE, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).
