NEWS RELEASE
2005-14 MASSACHUSETTS MILITARY RESERVATION, Cape Cod, Mass.
As part of the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellences (AFCEE) Southwest
Plumes Treatment Construction Project, AFCEE would like to announce upcoming traffic
changes for Hatchville residents and users of Boxberry Hill Road. From July 5,
2005 through September 2, 2005, Boxberry Hill Road (between Route 151 and Hatchville Road)
will be closed and only available for local traffic. The detour map on page 3
shows the location of this construction project as well as an alternate route that AFCEE
will have in place. The overall construction schedule for Boxberry Hill Road is June 16,
2005 through the end of September 2005. Pre-construction activities prior to July 5
included marking utilities, installing road signs, locating service connections, and saw
cutting asphalt. · Extraction well #1 and
Reinjection well #2 work timeframe: July 5, 2005 through September 2, 2005.
Boxberry Hill Road will be closed to through traffic (local traffic only). · Reinjection well #1
work timeframe: July 14, 2005 through September 21, 2005. No road closures
will be required; however, a police detail will be in place during drilling operations. · Pipeline construction:
From June 27, 2005 through September 13, 2005, select road closings required at tie-in
with Reinjection Well #1. One lane of local traffic will be open during construction
with a police detail in place. Pipeline will start at 5-way intersection (151, Sam
Turner, Boxberry) and proceed southeast along Boxberry Hill Road. Trenches will be
covered with steel road plates at the end of each day. · Electrical and
mechanical vault work at three well locations: From September 1 through September 29,
2005. No road closings required. One lane of local traffic will be open during
construction with a police detail in place. · Boxberry Hill full road
closures complete by September 2, 2005, with one lane closures complete by September 29,
2005. Trenching work timeframe: July 5, 2005 through September 23, 2005.
A temporary road patch will be in place after construction with a full asphalt
cover per Town of Falmouth requirements by April 2006. Background: To install an extraction or reinjection
well, a drill rig is used. Drilling and support equipment require up to a space of
approximately 40 feet x 120 feet to operate. It takes several weeks to install a
well. After that, several days are required to develop the well (i.e., make the well
usable for extraction or reinjection purposes). Following the drilling and
development, construction crews will install well pumps, a concrete vault flush to the
road surface, and piping. Underground piping will be installed by using trenching equipment.
This type of operation completes about 100 to 150 feet per day and requires an area
of 10 to 15 feet across, at a depth of 4 to 5 feet below grade. This construction
activity will be very similar to a water main installation. Typically, construction
activities begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. with a half-hour setup and breakdown
time. All equipment will be secured at the end of each workday. During the
installation of the wells, no equipment will block access to driveways. Noise from the drill rig can be heard close to the equipment, but
quickly dissipates as you move away from the rig. AFCEE will conduct sound level
testing at the edge of the construction zone to ensure the readings are within safe
standards. Drill rig operators will also use dust control techniques to minimize
impacts. For more information, please call Mr. Doug Karson, AFCEE Community Involvement
