NEWS RELEASE
2005-18 MASSACHUSETTS MILITARY RESERVATION, Cape Cod, Mass. Officials of the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) invite the public to visit an educational exhibit at the Barnstable County Fair. The exhibit features a small-scale model of a typical groundwater treatment system which is a technology AFCEE uses to clean up various plumes of contaminated groundwater from past military practices at the MMR. The exhibit will be located in the newly constructed metal commercial building on the fairgrounds in Falmouth and will be staffed during all fair hours from July 22 through July 30, 2005. A
small-scale groundwater model will be used to simulate how contaminated groundwater is
cleaned up at the MMR. In each demonstration, visitors will be able to see a plume
of colored water intercepted by an extraction well and pumped to a small activated carbon
vessel where it is cleaned. This is a small-scale version of the programs
treatment systems, which clean up more than 11 million gallons of contaminated groundwater
each day. In addition to the small-scale model, the exhibit will contain a display
board on which a large aerial photograph will be mounted and will show the locations of
Installation Restoration Program plumes and operating treatment systems. There will
be fact sheets available on the plumes and cleanup progress to take home. The
exhibit will be staffed by AFCEE officials, project scientists, engineers, and others who
are involved in the cleanup work. Representatives from the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP)
will help staff the exhibit along with members of a citizens involvement team, the
Plume Cleanup Team (PCT). For more information, please contact Mr. Douglas Karson, AFCEE/MMR Community Involvement Lead, at (508) 968-4678, extension 2; Fax (508) 968-4673; or E-mail doug.karson@brooks.af.mil.
