NEWS RELEASE
2005-28 MASSACHUSETTS MILITARY RESERVATION, Cape Cod, Mass. -
The Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) will hold a public hearing on
the Proposed Plan for the Fuel Spill 12 (FS-12) groundwater plume. The FS-12 plume
is located along the eastern boundary of the Massachusetts Military Reservation, northeast
of Snake Pond in Sandwich, Massachusetts. AFCEEs preferred alternative
consists of continuing to operate the existing groundwater extraction, treatment, and
reinjection (ETR) system and monitoring and optimizing it under the system performance and
ecological impact monitoring program until cleanup levels are met for the FS-12 plume.
It is AFCEEs current judgment that this preferred remedial alternative is
protective of human health and the environment. The U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) has concurred with this approach, and the Massachusetts Department of
Environmental Protection (DEP) will officially state a preferred alternative after the
public comment period ends. A posterboard session will precede the public hearing.
