Public Comment Period, Meeting and Hearing Planned for LF-1 and CS-23 Proposed Plan

MASSACHUSETTS MILITARY RESERVATION (MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. —Officials from the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) are holding a 30-day public comment period, a meeting and a hearing on the Proposed Plan for Landfill-1 (LF-1) Source Area and Groundwater and Chemical Spill-23 (CS-23) Groundwater. The 30-day formal public comment period on the LF-1/CS-23 Proposed Plan will begin on June 23 and will end on July 22, 2006.

A public meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on June 22, 2006 at Handy Hall, Cataumet Methodist Church, 1093 County Road, Cataumet, Massachusetts.  There will be a presentation on the plan and a question and answer period.    A poster board session will precede the meeting at 6 p.m.

A public hearing will be held at 6:00 p.m. on July 20, 2006 at Handy Hall, Cataumet Methodist Church, 1093 County Road, Cataumet, Massachusetts.    At this hearing the public can officially offer their oral or written comments on the plan.

In the LF-1/CS-23 Proposed Plan AFCEE proposes three separate actions.

  • LF-1 Source Area: Continue to monitor and maintain the existing cover system over three past disposal areas in the landfill.

  • LF-1 Plume: Continue to operate the existing extraction, treatment and infiltration system at the base boundary with system optimization as needed. Continue monitoring groundwater in the area during treatment and after the system is shut down in the future.

  • CS-23 Plume: Install, operate, maintain and monitor an extraction, treatment and reinjection system at the base boundary with system optimization as needed. Continue monitoring groundwater in the area after the system is shut down in the future.

For the plume actions AFCEE will continue to ensure residential use of groundwater in these areas is prevented until cleanup levels are met.

Copies of the LF-1/CS-23 Proposed Plan are available for review during the public comment period at the main libraries in Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee, and Sandwich, at the Installation Restoration Program Office and on the IRP/MMR website at: www.mmr.org /pubcommentperiod.htm.
