NEWS RELEASE
2006-9 MASSACHUSETTS
MILITARY RESERVATION (MMR), Cape Cod, Mass. Officials from the Air Force
Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) are holding a 30-day public comment period on
the Draft Fuel Spill-13 (FS-13) Underground Fuel Line Cantonment Decision Document,
July 2006. This
draft decision document describes a proposed no further action decision for the FS-13
Underground Fuel Line source area at the MMR. The
30-day public comment period will be held from August 1 - 30, 2006. No further action is proposed as current site conditions pose no threat to human health or the environment. This conclusion is based upon the results presented in a Site Inspection Technical Memorandum (1996) and a Supplemental Site Inspection Report (2006). Sampling data from these studies were compared to state and federal standards and it was determined that no further action was needed. The draft Decision Document calls for the removal of this site from further consideration in the Installation Restoration Program. The FS-13 site that was evaluated is
approximately 11 acres and located near the main rotary and the flight line area on the
base. A three-inch diameter cast-iron fuel
supply pipeline was built in the early 1960s to transport aviation gasoline and jet fuel
7.5 miles from the Cape Cod Canal to the flight line area. The pipeline operated until 1973. A fuel spill was reported in 1972. Historical records indicate that approximately 2,000 gallons of jet fuel were observed at the ground surface during an inspection of the underground fuel supply pipeline at this site. As a result, the area of the spill was excavated and a section of the pipe was replaced. Copies of the draft Decision
Document are available for review during the public comment period at the main libraries
in Bourne, Falmouth, Mashpee, and Sandwich, at the Installation Restoration Program Office
and on the IRP/MMR website at: http://www.mmr.org/pubcommentperiod.htm.
NOTE:
Only comments received during the 30-day public comment period will be considered. A final Decision Document
will be issued at a later date. For more information, please
