1.0 TREATMENT SYSTEMS

Ashumet Valley Axial System – Operations and Maintenance

  • The AVA treatment facility operated at an average flow rate of 1185 gallons per minute (gpm).

Chemical Spill-4 System – Operations and Maintenance

  • The CS-4 treatment facility operated at an average flow rate of 110 gpm.

Chemical Spill-10 In-Plume System – Operations and Maintenance

  • The CS-10 In-Plume treatment facility operated at an average flow rate of 2757 gpm.

CS-10/ SD-5 Sandwich Road ETR System – Operations and Maintenance

  • The Sandwich Road treatment facility operated at an average flow rate of 1104 gpm.

Coonamessett Wellhead Treatment System – Operations and Maintenance

  • The wellhead operated at an average flow rate of 595 gpm.

Fuel Spill-1 System – Operations and Maintenance

  • Checked the remaining treatment facility equipment daily and work is underway to dismantle the remaining equipment.

Fuel Spill-12 ETR System – Operations and Maintenance

  • The extraction, treatment and reinjection (ETR) system operated at an average flow of 617 gpm.

Fuel Spill-28 Time Critical Treatment System/Coonamessett Bog

  • The FS-28 treatment system operated at an average flow rate of 693 gpm.

Fuel Spill-28 Treatment System Upgrade

  • Continued construction upgrades to the FS-28 treatment building and pump house.

Landfill-1 System - Operations and Maintenance

  • The LF-1 treatment facility operated at an average flow rate of 698 gpm.

2.0 STUDIES AND INVESTIGATIONS

Ashumet and Johns Ponds Risk Management

  • Preparing the Ashumet and Johns Ponds Risk Management Monitoring Results – November 2002.

Bourne Upgradient Groundwater Monitoring

  • Completed the December monthly sampling event.
  • Submitted the Bourne Upgradient Groundwater Monitoring November 2002 Monthly Results.

Chemical Spill-4, Chemical Spill-20, Chemical Spill-21, and Fuel Spill-29 Pre-Design Investigations and Wellfield Design

  • Completed interpretation of data from the CS-21 and FS-29 plumes.
  • Conducted a public informational meeting in Hatchville to discuss future construction activities in the area.
  • Began interpretation of hydraulic data collected from the aquifer test and began improvements to the groundwater model so it can replicate observed aquifer response.

Chemical Spill-8 Coast Guard Abandoned Radio Cabinet Area Site Investigation

  • Excavated 20 yards of soil potentially impacted by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB).
  • Completed post-excavation soil sampling.

Chemical Spill-10 Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study

  • Updating the numerical groundwater model with the latest trichloroethene (TCE) concentrations.

Chemical Spill-18 Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA)

  • Preparing the letter report on the results of the September 2002 soil sampling.

Chemical Spill-19 Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study

  • Feasibility study is temporarily on hold pending completion of comment resolution on the Draft Final Chemical Spill-19 Remedial Investigation Report.

Chemical Spill-19 Supplemental Remedial Investigation

  • Preparing a project note work plan documenting the proposed drilling and sampling of an additional monitoring well cluster west of the CS-19 site.

Chemical Spill-23 Investigation

  • Began site restoration activities.

Eastern Briarwood and Western Aquafarm Feasibility Study, Proposed Plan, and Record of Decision

  • Completed the Draft Risk Assessment for Eastern Briarwood and Western Aquafarm.

Landfill-1 Feasibility Study

  • Preparing the LF-1 Feasibility Study.
3.0 SYSTEM PERFORMANCE AND ECOLOGICAL IMPACT MONITORING

Ashumet Valley SPEIM

  • Preparing the Final Ashumet Valley Axial 2001 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.

Chemical Spill-10 SPEIM

  • Completed the monthly direct impact monitoring for the CS-10 treatment system.

Submitted the Draft Combined Storm Drain-5 and Chemical Spill-10 2002 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report and presented recommendations and conclusions and the first quarter results at a weekly technical update meeting.

  • Began site access approval process to complete a groundwater screening boring near the eastern portion of the CS-10 In-Plume southern infiltration trench.

Eastern Briarwood and Western Aquafarm Monitoring Program

  • Completed responses to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency comments on the Eastern Briarwood and Western Aquafarm Groundwater Monitoring Program Semiannual Letter Report – June 2002 Results.

Fuel Spill-1 SPEIM

  • Submitted the Draft Fuel Spill-1 2002 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.
  • Continued hourly temperature and dissolved oxygen measurements.
  • Completed quarterly groundwater and surface water monitoring.
  • Completed monthly water level monitoring of piezometers 36PZ44235 (vernal pool south of EW7), 36PZ4236 (wetland north of Grafton Pocknet Road), and 36PZ4237 (wetland east of K1 bog).

Fuel Spill-12 SPEIM

  • Presented the Fuel Spill-12 Third Quarter Data Transmittal at a weekly technical update meeting.
  • Completed the continuous and manual monitoring of water levels for the FS-12 plant shutdown.
  • Completed semiannual chemical monitoring of the FS-12 SPEIM network.
  • Completed synoptic measurements of the FS-12 SPEIM peripheral hydraulic network.
  • Began deployment of diffusion samplers in four extraction wells.

Fuel Spill-28 SPEIM

  • Completed the monthly groundwater elevation monitoring and Coonamessett Water Supply Well monitoring.
  • Continued hourly temperature and dissolved oxygen measurements.
  • Submitted the Data Transmittal of Monthly Monitoring Analytical Results Coonamessett Wellhead Treatment – November 2002.

Landfill-1 SPEIM

  • Preparing the Draft Landfill-1 2002 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.

Storm Drain-5 SPEIM

  • Completed the monthly direct impact monitoring for the SD-5 treatment systems.
  • Submitted the Draft Combined Storm Drain-5 and Chemical Spill-10 2002 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.
  • Presented recommendations and conclusions from the Draft Combined Storm Drain-5 and Chemical Spill-10 2002 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report at a weekly technical update meeting.
  • Presented the first quarter results at a weekly technical update meeting.

4.0 REMEDIAL ACTION

Fuel Spill-1 Remedial Action

  • Provided support to the Army Corp of Engineers for property access.
  • Continued contracting for materials and construction subcontracts.

5.0 SOURCE AREAS

Chemical Spill 4 (CS-4)

  • Additional sample results showed no exceedences.

Chemical Spill 10 (CS-10)

  • The CS-10 SVE system is operating normally.

Firefighter Training Area 1 (FTA-1)

  • Completed transport and disposal of soils. Two loads were shipped off-site for disposal.
  • Conducted selective sampling at stockpile areas.
  • Stumps and brush were chipped and they will be spread around the site.

Firefighter Training Area 2 (FTA-2)

  • The FTA-2 system is operating normally.
  • Prepared a project note for the SD-5 zone and submitted for regulatory review.

PFSA

  • The PFSA system operated normally after a system belt replacement.

Priority 2 and 3 Study Areas

  • Sample results for Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) showed no exceedences.

6.0 PROGRAM PROJECTS

Operations and Maintenance Building

  • Reviewed construction sign for the building site.
  • Received a Notice to Proceed.

Well Abandonment Program

  • Abandoned 150-155 wells to date.
  • Preparing the Phase 2 Wells Abandonment Report.
