1.0 TREATMENT SYSTEMS

CS-10/ SD-5 Sandwich Road ETR System – Operations and Maintenance

  • The Sandwich Road treatment facility operated at an average flow rate of 1134 gallons per minute (gpm).

Coonamessett Wellhead Treatment System – Operations and Maintenance

  • The wellhead operated at a flow rate of 675 gpm.

Fuel Spill-1 and Fuel Spill-28 Treatment System Upgrades
(This section is being reported for the first time.)

  • Awarded contract for treatment system upgrades.
  • Scheduled field work for system upgrades to begin mid-July 2002.

Fuel Spill-12 ETR – Operations and Maintenance

  • The extraction, treatment and reinjection (ETR) system operated at an average flow rate of 748 gpm.

Fuel Spill-28 Time Critical Treatment System/Coonamessett Bog

  • The FS-28 treatment system operated at an average flow rate of 711 gpm.

2.0 STUDIES AND INVESTIGATIONS

Ashumet Pond Trophic Health Technical Memorandum

  • Preparing the Final Ashumet Pond Trophic Health Technical Memorandum.

Bourne Upgradient Groundwater Monitoring

  • Completed the monthly and quarterly sampling events.
  • Submitted to EPA/DEP the Bourne Upgradient Groundwater Monitoring May 2002 Monthly Results.

Chemical Spill-4 Groundwater Monitoring

  • Submitted to EPA/DEP the Chemical Spill-4 Long-Term Monitoring Data Transmittal –April 2002 Results.

Chemical Spill-8 Coast Guard Abandoned Radio Cabinet Area Site Investigation

  • Concluded the public comment period for the Final Chemical Spill-8 (Coast Guard) Radio Cabinet Area Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis; no public comments were received.
  • Preparing the Draft Chemical Spill-8 (Coast Guard) Radio Cabinet Area Action Memorandum.

Chemical Spill-10 Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study

  • Submitted to EPA/DEP the responses to comments letter on the Draft Chemical Spill -10 Groundwater Feasibility Study Report.

Chemical Spill-18 Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA)

  • The EE/CA report is temporarily on hold pending results of additional soil sampling. Activity is anticipated to resume in October 2002.
  • Completed unexploded ordnance (UXO) contractor bid solicitation for avoidance survey of 15 sampling locations.

Chemical Spill-18 Supplemental Site Investigation

  • Initiated re-evaluation of risk screening using information provided by the EPA on surrogate screening values for specific compounds.

Chemical Spill-19 Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study

  • Feasibility study is temporarily on hold pending completion of comment resolution on the Draft Final CS-19 Remedial Investigation Report.

Chemical Spill-19 Supplemental Remedial Investigation

  • Held comment resolution meeting on Draft Final Chemical Spill-19 Remedial Investigation Report with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.

Comprehensive Long-Term Monitoring Plan

  • Submitted to EPA/DEP the Comprehensive Long-Term Monitoring Plan, Version 3.0.

Southwest Operable Unit (SWOU) Pre-Design Data Gap Investigation

  • Continued Phase I model testing of conceptual wellfield design scenarios for the CS-21, FS-29, CS-4 and CS-20 plumes.
  • Conducted meetings with NSTAR (electric company) and Ballymeade Country Club concerning the upcoming pump test and future construction of remedial systems.
  • Continued site preparation and restoration activities for Phase II drilling locations.
  • Completed drilling 81MW0017, 80MW0013, and 69MW1704.
  • Began drilling 69MW1705.
  • Completed development of four monitoring wells.
  • Began the Phase II groundwater sampling event.
3.0  SYSTEM PERFORMANCE AND ECOLOGICAL IMPACT MONITORING

Ashumet Valley SPEIM

  • Preparing the Draft Ashumet Valley Axial 2001 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.

Chemical Spill-10 SPEIM

  • Completed the monthly direct impact monitoring for the CS-10 treatment systems.
  • Submitted to EPA/DEP the Final Combined Storm Drain-5 and Chemical Spill-10 2001 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.
  • Began the CS-10 system-wide hydraulic shutdown event.

Fuel Spill-1 SPEIM

  • Continued hourly temperature and dissolved oxygen measurements for FS-1 SPEIM.
  • Completed quarterly surface water and groundwater sampling events.
  • Completed monthly water level monitoring of piezometers 36PZ44235 (vernal pool south of EW7) and 36PZ4236 (wetland north of Grafton Pocknet Road).
  • Completed installation of piezometer 36PZ4237 in the wetland east of the K1 bog.

Fuel Spill-12 SPEIM

  • Submitted to EPA/DEP the Draft Fuel Spill-12 2001 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.
  • Continued biweekly drive point sampling in Snake Pond.
  • Presented the FS-12 1st quarter data transmittal to the regulators.

Fuel Spill-28 SPEIM

  • Continued evaluating the FS-28 treatment system hydraulic evaluation data.
  • Continued preparing the draft FS-28 2002 annual SPEIM report.
  • Continued hourly temperature and dissolved oxygen measurements for FS-28 SPEIM.
  • Completed the monthly surface water sampling event.
  • Completed Coonamessett Water Supply Well monitoring.
  • Submitted to EPA/DEP the Data Transmittal of Monthly Monitoring Analytical Results Coonamessett Wellhead Treatment – May 2002.
  • Submitted to EPA/DEP the Data Transmittal of Monthly Monitoring Analytical Results Coonamessett Wellhead Treatment – June 2002.

Landfill-1 SPEIM

  • Mowed the Landfill-1 cover system.

Storm Drain-5 SPEIM

  • Completed the monthly direct impact monitoring for the SD-5 treatment systems.
  • Completed the fourth quarter sampling event.
  • Submitted to EPA/DEP the Final Combined Storm Drain-5 and Chemical Spill-10 2001 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.

Western Aquafarm and Eastern Briarwood Monitoring Program

  • Completed the semiannual sampling event.

4.0  SOURCE AREAS

Fire Training Area 2 (FTA-2)

  • The FTA-2 SVE system is operating normally. Air sampling was conducted at the system and the well field.
  • O&M manual will be issued for review.

PFSA

  • Trenching and connecting the wells for the PFSA system is complete. The SVE is complete except for the ORENDA well sites.
  • The O&M manual has been put on hold until the system is completed.

Chemical Spill 4 (CS-4)

  • Drilling completed for seven scheduled well sites.
  • Sampling completed at CS-4A.

Chemical Spill 10 (CS-10)

  • Comments received from EPA on the Draft Ecological Risk Assessment CS-10F Technical Memorandum and the Draft Ecological Risk Assessment CS-10F Technical Memorandum.
  • EPA/DEP comments received on the Draft Wetlands/Wildlife Characterization Tech Memo for CS-10F and the Draft Wetlands/Wildlife Characterization Tech Memo for CS-10F.
  • The CS-10C SVE system is operating normally. A liner will be placed for recovery enhancement following a respiration test. Piping for the area will begin after the liner is installed.

Chemical Spill 22 (CS-22)

  • The northern area of CS-22 has been marked utilizing GPS and the site mapped.
  • Three southern excavations were completed. The asphalt pile has been removed and soil samples were taken.

Fuel Spill 9 (FS-9)

  • Comments were received from the regulatory agencies on the Draft Remedial Action Report Area Of Contamination for FS-9. An additional appendix will be added with analytical information and results.

Storm Drain 2 (SD-2)

  • Excavation of detail A and B scheduled to start after July 1st.

Storm Drain 3 (SD-3)

  • SD-3B has been planted and seeded. A site walk with the Mashpee Conservation Committee will be scheduled.

Storm Drain 4 (SD-4)

  • Received comments from the EPA on the Draft Ecological Risk Assessment Technical Memorandum for SD-4.

Storm Drain 5 (SD-5)

  • Comments were received from EPA/DEP on the Letter Work Plan for SD-5 detail A.
  • The well was installed at SD-5 detail A.
