1.0 TREATMENT SYSTEMS

Ashumet Valley Axial – Operations and Maintenance

  • The AVA treatment system operated at an average flow rate of 853 gallons per minute (gpm).
  • Rebuilt the Sandwich Road infiltration trench to eliminate the perching of water.
  • Began rebuilding the Currier Road infiltration trench to avoid similar anticipated problems.
  • Extraction well flow rates were reduced as a result of trench rebuilding and electrical problems at extraction wells EW2 and EW3.

Chemical Spill 4 – Operations and Maintenance

  • The CS-4 treatment facility operated at an average flow rate of 60 gpm.

Chemical Spill 10 In-Plume – Operations and Maintenance

  • The CS-10 in-plume treatment facility operated at an average flow rate of 2758 gpm.

CS-10/ SD-5 Sandwich Road ETR System – Operations and Maintenance

  • The Sandwich Road treatment facility operated at an average flow rate of 1154 gpm.

Coonamessett Wellhead Treatment System – Operations and Maintenance

  • The wellhead is operating at an average flow rate of 595 gpm.

Fuel Spill 1 – Operations and Maintenance

  • Checked the remaining treatment system equipment daily.

Fuel Spill 1 Treatment System Upgrade

  • Work on this project has been terminated due to fire damage to the FS-1 treatment facility.
  • Continued investigation as to the cause and origin of the fire.

Fuel Spill 12 ETR – Operations and Maintenance

  • The extraction, treatment and reinjection (ETR) system operated at an average flow of 573 gpm.

Fuel Spill 28 Time Critical Treatment System/Coonamessett Bog

  • The FS-28 treatment system operated at an average flow rate of 724 gpm.

Fuel Spill 28 Treatment System Upgrade

  • Continued construction upgrades to the FS-28 treatment building and pump house.

Landfill 1 - Operations and Maintenance

  • The LF-1 treatment facility operated at an average flow rate of 679gpm.

2.0 STUDIES AND INVESTIGATIONS

Ashumet and Johns Ponds Risk Management

  • Completed the November quarterly sampling event.

Bourne Upgradient Groundwater Monitoring

  • Completed the November monthly sampling event.
  • Submitted the Bourne Upgradient Groundwater Monitoring October 2002 Monthly Results.

Chemical Spill 1 Coast Guard Long-Term Monitoring

  • Submitted the Chemical Spill-1 Coast Guard Monitoring August 2002 Semiannual Results.

Chemical Spill 4, Chemical Spill 20, Chemical Spill 21, and Fuel Spill 29 Pre-Design Investigations and Wellfield Design

  • Completed installation and development of extraction well 82EW0001.
  • Completed the constant rate aquifer test at 82EW0001.
  • Began site restoration activities associated with the aquifer test.
  • Finished interpreting data from the CS-4 and CS-20 plumes.

Chemical Spill 10 Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study

  • Received U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) comments on the second memorandum of resolution (MOR 2) on the Draft Chemical Spill -10 Groundwater Feasibility Study Report.
  • Agreed to update the groundwater model used for the feasibility study with the latest trichloroethene (TCE) concentrations and to re-run the simulations for the various feasibility study alternatives.

Chemical Spill 18 Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA)

  • Continued receiving analytical results from surface soil samples collected in late September.
  • Preparing a letter report documenting the results of the September 2002 soil sampling.

Chemical Spill 19 Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study

  • Feasibility study is temporarily on hold pending completion of comment resolution on the Draft Final Chemical Spill-19 Remedial Investigation Report.

Chemical Spill 19 Supplemental Remedial Investigation

  • Held several meetings with representatives from EPA and Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to discuss justification for additional groundwater investigation.
3.0 SYSTEM PERFORMANCE AND ECOLOGICAL IMPACT MONITORING

Ashumet Valley SPEIM

  • Held comment resolution meeting on the Responses to Comments on the Draft Ashumet Valley Axial 2001 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.
  • Delivered the Memorandum of Resolution on the Draft Ashumet Valley Axial 2001 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.
  • Preparing the Final Ashumet Valley Axial 2001 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.

Chemical Spill 10 SPEIM

  • Completed the monthly direct impact monitoring for the CS-10 treatment systems.
  • Preparing the Draft Combined Storm Drain-5 and Chemical Spill-10 2002 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.

Eastern Briarwood and Western Aquafarm Monitoring Program

  • Preparing responses to EPA comments on the Eastern Briarwood and Western Aquafarm Groundwater Monitoring Program Semiannual Letter Report – June 2002 Results.

Fuel Spill 1 SPEIM

  • Preparing the Draft Fuel Spill-1 2002 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.
  • Continued hourly temperature and dissolved oxygen measurements.
  • Completed biweekly groundwater and surface water monitoring in response to the treatment system fire.
  • Completed monthly water level monitoring of piezometers 36PZ44235 (vernal pool south of EW7), 36PZ4236 (wetland north of Grafton Pocknet Road), and 36PZ4237 (wetland east of K1 bog).

Fuel Spill 12 SPEIM

  • Submitted the Final Fuel Spill-12 2001 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.
  • Began the continuous and manual monitoring of water levels for the FS-12 plant shutdown.

Fuel Spill 28 SPEIM

  • Submitted the responses to comments letter (RCL) on the Draft Fuel Spill-28 2002 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.
  • Completed the monthly groundwater elevation monitoring.
  • Continued hourly temperature and dissolved oxygen measurements.
  • Completed Coonamessett Water Supply Well monitoring.

Landfill 1 SPEIM

  • Preparing the Draft Landfill-1 2002 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.

Storm Drain 5 SPEIM

  • Completed the monthly direct impact monitoring for the SD-5 treatment systems.
  • Preparing the Draft Combined Storm Drain-5 and Chemical Spill-10 2002 Annual System Performance and Ecological Impact Monitoring Report.

4.0 REMEDIAL ACTION

Fuel Spill 1 Remedial Action

  • Continued pre-construction planning and contracting, and property access support.

5.0 SOURCE AREAS

Chemical Spill 4 (CS-4)

  • Additional sampling results were reviewed to verify the extent of the contamination.

  • Discussed final grading plans to direct drainage run-off.

Chemical Spill 10 (CS-10)

  • The CS-10 SVE system is operating normally.

Firefighter Training Area 1 (FTA-1)

  • Completed transport and disposal of soils.

  • Conducted selective sampling at the stockpile areas and completed removal of the scrap piles.

  • Began site restoration of the area.

Firefighter Training Area 2 (FTA-2)

  • The FTA-2 SVE system is operating normally.

  • AFCEE is reviewing the site closure sampling plan.

PFSA

  • The PFSA system is operating normally.
  • Sampling results for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) showed no elevated levels.

Priority 2 and 3 Study Areas

  • Additional Sampling has been completed.

6.0 PROGRAM PROJECTS

Operations and Maintenance Building

  • Created draft sign for the building site.
  • Scheduled a kick-off meeting with base representatives concerning the sewer line.

Well Abandonment Program

  • Abandoned 17 wells.
  • Developed a list of 15 new wells.
  • Awaiting access to 20-30 off-base wells.
